A Brief History of Meals On Wheels

In May of 1972 a group of concerned citizens met to discuss ways to provide meals for people in need who, due to age, illness or injury, inability to shop or prepare food, or other handicaps, could not prepare a proper meal for themselves.

At that time there were no nutrition centers or other sources of meals.

A board was formed, by-laws written, officers elected, and Palmerton Meals on Wheels was born.

Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization supported by donations from the local United Way, Horsehead Community Development Fund, local businesses, and generous citizens.

Meals include a hot dinner, makings for a light lunch, and a simple breakfast.

Meals are prepared in the kitchen of the Palmerton Hospital and delivered by volunteers while they are still nice and warm.

These volunteers do their job Monday through Friday, rain or shine, heat or cold, even on holidays.

Icy roads are another thing though; all the clients receive emergency meals to use in case of unsafe driving conditions.
